Whistle Stop Park
A shaded gathering space at the heart of downtown
Project Type: Public Space
Location: Redding, CA
Scope: Landscape Design, Public Realm
Whistle Stop Park transforms a former parking lot into a vibrant public space that offers shade, comfort, and community in the heart of Redding. As part of the larger Block 7 redevelopment—alongside California Place, a new net-zero affordable housing development—the park is designed to serve both residents and the broader public, bringing much-needed green space to a once-empty urban center.
Drawing from the region’s geology and ecology, the design creates a place to pause, play, or gather—whether during a hot summer afternoon or a cool evening event.
Custom Steel Pavilion
The park’s central structure is made from a series of stacked, weathered steel ribs that form a shaded open-air pavilion. The shape and material echo the layered landscape and historic rail lines that give the park its name.
Cooling Microclimate
Large boulders scattered through the park house a water misting system, creating cooler air and a comfortable place to gather in Redding’s extreme heat.
Flexible Green Space
A central lawn is sized and shaped to accommodate a variety of uses—from casual lounging to concerts and community events.
Evening Activation
String lights, planted edges, and soft paving make the park welcoming day and night. The design encourages lingering and supports ongoing programming and pop-up events.
